To mark the end of London Fashion Week there was only one place to be, and for me that was the NME awards. The location was Brixton Academy and it was full to the brim of rock royalty. As a Foo Fighters fanatic the 90 minute set performed to close the awards show was the highlight of the evening, but several other artists made the cut including Hurts and Suede.
Kicking off the awards show My Chemical Romance took to the stage with one of their new tracks ‘Na Na Na’ which later picked up an award for best video. Laura Marling picked up Best Solo Artist and Muse picked up Best British Band – completely understandable. Arcade Fire won Best Album with the undeniably fantastic ‘The Suburbs’, although lost out on Best International Band which was sweeped up by My Chemical Romance. Biffy Clyro won the award for Best Live Band, Hurts won Best New Band and Best Track went to Foals with Spanish Sahara, another understandable win in my opinion following a moving performance of the song last year at a gig I went too. The Best Festival gong was awarded to Glasto, Best TV Show to Skins, Best Dance Floor Filler to Professor Green and Outstanding Contribution to music went to PJ Harvey. The NME awards are always enjoyable, especially when you are graced with fashion icon Kate Moss whizzing through the tables and the likes of Alison Mosshart and Alexa Chung. Loved it.
On to the finale Dave Grohl picked up the Godlike Genius Award which he humbly dedicated to the late Kurt Cobain, a moving moment of the evening which followed an unbelievably electric performance from The Foos. Head banging, playing guitar on the tables amongst the eager VIP crowd was the highlight. Ecstatic about being inches from Dave as we could feel the sweat fall from his head. Amazing.
